Cherokee Woman…..Black Pride!

True Fact…….Many freed and escaped slaves went west where there was true freedom and were adopted by tribes taking Native American wives and husbands.

Well, I learned something today!

True fact: Some Native American tribes kept slaves.  In fact, Native American tribes kept slaves after the Constitution was amended to set them free because they weren’t governed by the laws of the United States.  Don Cheadle’s ancestor was one of these slaves as documented on African American Lives.  Also some tribes, such as the Cherokee Nation, have refused to acknowledge black people with blood ties to their nation as members of the nation.  The Cherokee Nation actually voted to exclude “freedmen” as members of the tribe.  Cherokee Freedmen descendants are still fighting for full citizenship and full rights as part of the Cherokee Nation.

Antiblackness is a thing that exists even among minorities.
